Entwined is a series of paper weavings made from papers consisting of plant fiber gathered in the mountains of North Carolina, Iowa City, and Martha’s Vineyard—miscanthus, gladioli, yucca, milkweed, cattail, and iris...The series began in the fall of 2024 as a way to connect to the land and to the people of Western North Carolina following the destruction wreaked by Hurricane Helene, destruction that is hard to fathom. Several of these first weavings contain ‘found poetry’ drawn from ‘Gift From the Hills’ by Lucy Morgan, the founder of Penland School of Crafts in North Caroline. It has expanded beyond that first impulse, but is still grounded in the process of weaving papers as a reflection on the many threads between land and the people who live on the land, the resources that land provides, the value to be found in community (especially in our times of seemingly constant upheaval)— between materials and process, between process and meaning, and the meaning implicit in materials and in making.
